Horseback ride around the Chuzalongos Valley

 Horseback Ride - Chuzalongos Volcano
Duration: 8 hours
Distance:
8 kilometers
Difficulty:
Light
Altitude:
4120 to 4500 m.a.s.l.

The Chuzalongos are three peaks remaining from an ancient crater that surround a swamp and are located to the west of the Antisana volcano.  This magical place is home to rabbits, foxes, llamas, wild-horses, falchions, curiquingues, hummingbirds, sparrow-hawks, condors, owls and many other species.  The typical highland vegetation let us appreciate a variety of plants resistant to extreme cold weather like chuquiraguas, verbens and the highland grass among others.

Our adventure begins at the Antisana Hacienda where we will ride northward.  After an hour of riding we reach a hidden valley with a complete view of the Antisana Volcano to our right and the Chuzalongos crater to the left.  This is the perfect opportunity to appreciate the fragile ecosystem of the Andean highland, which has been untouched by man.  After a short stop, where we will explain the importance of the highland and its influence on other ecosystems, we make our way back to the Hacienda, to enjoy nutritious Ecuadorian cuisine.

The Antisana Hacienda is an old, large estate located in the highlands of the volcano.  It was the staying place of the German scientist Alexander von Humboldt and other scientific researchers such as Wolf, Whymper, Hans Meyer, Stubel, and Marcos Jiménez de la Espada.  These men gave the Volcano Avenue its name.  The Hacienda's house is of typical Andean construction, made of sun dried bricks and straw ceiling.  It includes a restaurant and a warm and cozy interior.

Horseback ride to the plane wreckage
Horseback ride through the south of the Antisana Volcano - Ecuador
Duration: 8 hours
Distance:
7 kilometers
Difficulty:
Light
Altitude:
4120 to 4500 m.a.s.l.

We will get on the horses at Hacienda Antisana at 4120 m.a.s.l. to then head northwest across the Antisana volcano moorland. Along a vast meadow almost flat and swampy, full of typical Andean moorland plants like chuquiraguas, licopods, gencians and straw among others.  We will see rabbits quickly running away from the horses among the bushes, maybe a fox or a deer family could be seen with some luck and there is a wild horse family that inhabits the area.  Birds are everywhere, condors appear flying high in the sky, cara caras and small hawks are seen very easily as some conebills and hummingbirds.

After an hour and a half of riding surrounded by beautiful landscapes we will reach a gully where some time ago an airplane crashed.  On that spot it's still possible to see some parts of the plane wreckage spread all over the straw: a big piece of wing, two engines, glasses, small metal parts.  There aren't any signs of the crash on the ground but it is an impressive sight.

On the crash spot, we will sit for a moment to enjoy a snack and warm tea before returning to the Hacienda. Although this place sounds gloomy it is very peaceful and quite, the wind blows softly out to the valleys.

Horseback ride through the south of the Antisana Volcano and Micacocha Lake

Horseback ride through the south of the Antisana Volcano - Ecuador
Duration: 8 hours
Distance:
7 kilometers
Difficulty:
Light
Altitude:
4120 to 4350 m.a.s.l.

This horseback ride begins at the Antisana Hacienda at 4120 meters above sea level.  There, at the old Hacienda House, we will begin our horseback ride.  We will head northward through the ancient lava flow, now covered with vegetation of the highland, like chuquiraguas, mosses, valerians, straw, pillow-plants and many other species typical for this region. As we reach the vicinity of the valley that surrounds the volcano the flora and fauna become more abundant.  Rabbits, foxes, llamas, wild-horses, pumas, deer, falchions, curiquingues, hummingbirds, sparrow-hawks, condors, owls and many other find their home in these valleys that we will ride across.

Our route goes through swamps, hills and creaks as we advance with a full view of the west side of the volcano and a panoramic view of the west Ecuadorian Andes mountain chain to the other side.   After an hour and a half we make a short stop for a warm beverage with the Micacocha Lake at our feet.  Following its shores we ride up a small hill to the west to discover an extension of flat land used by the sheep farmers of the region.  We end the ride at the Hacienda where a typical Ecuadorian meal will be waiting for us.
