Yachana Lodge Spanish Program

Yachana Lodge is an award winning ecotourism lodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon region.  Yachana means "a place for learning" in Kichwa.  The lodge supports the surrounding communities in education, health, conservation and sustainable development.

In addition to studying Spanish for 4-hours a day there are planned excursions and activities to keep you busy for the week, exploring the surrounding jungle, river, and local culture.

Students leave Quito for Tena on Sunday, in order to catch the canoe down river on the Monday morning.  After a week of classes and activities the program ends on Friday.  From there you can either stay an extra night in Tena where you can enjoy white-water rafting or other activities, or return to Quito with your teacher.

Itinerary:
(subject to revision depending on local conditions)

Sunday:
Depart by bus from Quito to Tena (about 5-hours), overnight in Tena.

Monday:
By bus to Los Rios to meet the canoe to go downriver to Yachana.  Introductory tour after lunch. Spanish classes and dinner.

Tuesday:
Classes in the morning, rainforest hike after lunch to explore the flora and fauna. Cleansing ritual with shaman in the evening.

Wednesday:
Early morning bird-watching excursion if you like.  Classes after breakfast.  In the afternoon visit Yachana's technical high school, learn about the culture.  Cooking class and crafts making activities in the evening.

Thursday:
Early morning bird-watching to a different location if you like.  Classes after breakfast.  After lunch try your hand at panning for gold, relax in a hammock, explore the locale with other guests.

Friday:
Breakfast followed by Spanish classes in the morning.  After lunch leave by canoe to return to Quito by bus or to stay another night in Tena to enjoy local activities at the weekend.
