Granada, Nicaragua - City TourHalf Day | Departs at 8:00 a.m. | One of the oldest and best preserved cities in the New World, the colorful city of Granada has a fascinating history and rich culture. Browse outdoor markets, stroll through the Plaza Central and admire the city’s iconic sites on foot and horse-drawn carriage.   Popular stops include the city Cathedral and the Convent and Museum of San Francisco with its gallery of pre-Colombian sculptures.  Your private guide will relate Granada’s storied past and introduce you to the best shopping and dining available in the bustling city.

Colonial León and Lunch at the Pacific

Colonial Leon - city tourFull Day | Departs Daily at 7:30 am | León is home to Nicaragua’s largest universities, museums, and the largest cathedral in all of Central America.  This tour explores the colonial city with visits to the Ortiz-Gurdian Museum, which houses a wide range of sculptures and paintings and the Rubén Dario Museum, to learn about Nicaragua’s most famous poet.  A short drive through the countryside will take you to the beach town of Las Peñitas for a relaxing seaside lunch before heading back to Pacaya Lodge.

Isla de Ometepe: A Day on Nicaragua’s most famous Island
 

Isla de Omtepe, NicaraguaFull Day Tour | Departs Daily at 5:30 a.m. | Picture an island of volcanoes rising out of the blue Nicaraguan lake.  The twin volcanic peaks of Ometepe have been attracting travelers for years. Pacaya Lodge offers shuttle service to San Jorge, where guests can take the scenic one-hour ferry ride across Lake Nicaragua.  Once on the island, the tour proceeds to the Ceibo Museum, where the area’s pre-columbian indian history is explained. After the museum, the tour stops by the scenic Charco Verde Reserve.  This reserve is known for its rich birdlife, howler monkeys, butterflies, and lush vegetation.  Spend time exploring the jungle, and follow it up with a swim and delicious lunch by "Ojo de Agua," a natural spring, rumored to have healing properties.

Volcan Masaya and Artisan Tour

Masaya Volcano, NicaraguaFull Day | Departs Daily at 8:30 a.m. | Watch the iconic smoke billow out of Volcan Masaya!  Upon arrival, guests will receive a guided tour of the park’s museum and interpretation center, which features the region’s geological history and local mythology.  Next, guests will head to the crater itself for a chance to peer into the volcano.  Several short trails and viewpoints line the trails and provide excellent views of the countryside and volcanic landscape.  After visiting Volcan Mayasa, the tour stops by the famous Masaya handicraft market, where a number of internationally acclaimed artisans reside and sell their artwork.  The tour concludes with stops in Catarina and San Juan de Oriente, two of the Pueblos Blancos, which are famous for artisanal excellence.

Managua: Explore Nicaragua’s Historic Capital

Managua, NicaraguaFull Day | Departs Daily at 8:00 a.m. | Many travelers overlook Managua, arriving at the international airport and then heading straight to Granada or the beaches.  However, Managua’s rich political history, architectural features, and recent modernization makes it a must-see for visitors.  Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the city is where the old meets the new.  On the tour, guests will notice the contrast between Old Managua, still recovering from the 1972 earthquake, and the emerging "new" Managua city.  The tour stops by to the two principal cathedrals, a thriving market, Lake Managua, and the National Palace so that guests can catch a glimpse of modern city life in one of Central America’s capitals.

Pueblos Blancos and Masaya, NicaraguaFull Day | Departs at 8:00 a.m. | Nicaragua’s Pueblos Blancos are famous for their outstanding artisanal traditions, Spanish architecture, and unique customs.  This tour begins with a stop in the charming town of Catarina, where our expert guides lead guests past stunning gardens and lake vistas.  The next stop on the trip is San Juan de Oriente, home to world-renowned ceramic workshops and artists.  Here, guests can speak with local artists and get a feel for the colorful nature and history of Nicaraguan art.  The final stop on the tour is Masaya, the cultural heart of Nicaragua.  Masaya bleeds local flavor, color, tradition, and artwork, and the artisan market here is the country’s largest.

Granada by morning, Islands by afternoon

Isleta de Granada, NicaraguaFull Day | Departs Daily at 8:00 a.m. | Bustling Granada, the oldest European-founded city in the Americas, is a must-see on any trip to Nicaragua.  A horse-drawn carriage leads guests down Granada’s cobblestone streets.  The ride offers stunning views of the city’s Spanish colonial architecture.  Stops include the San Franscisco Convent Museum (which houses many pre-Columbian artifacts), the vibrant city market, and several culturally significant churches and monuments. For a change of scene, the second half of the day takes guests to the "Isletas de Granada," 350+ small islands just off the coast of Granada in Lake Nicaragua. There, guests will be treated to a delicious local island lunch followed by a bit of wildlife sightseeing by boat before returning to Granada.

Nature and Wildlife:

Sightseeing and Wildlife at El Chocoyero Nature Reserve

Montibelli Prvate Reserve and El Chocyero National Reserve, NicaraguaHalf Day | Departs Daily at 3 p.m. | El Chocoyero National Reserve is famous for its birdlife, especially the thousands of "chocoyos" (parakeets), who build their nests in the surrounding mountain walls.  Hike past dense vegetation, monkeys, reptiles, and freshwater crabs as you make your way to two impressive waterfalls.  Enjoy the scenic drive from Pacaya Lodge to the reserve, which winds through the town of Ticuantepe and Nicaragua’s scenic coffee farms.  This half-day tour can be combined with a visit to the nearby Montibelli Private Reserve for a full day of nature exploration.

Nature in Nicaragua: The Montibelli and El Chocoyero Nature Reserves

Parrot - Montibelli and El Chocoyero Nature Reserves, NicaraguaFull Day | Departs Daily at 8:00 a.m. | The day begins with a birdwatching tour in the Montibelli private reserve where guests may see parrots, hummingbirds, and guardabarrancos (the national bird of Nicaragua).  In addition to brilliant bird sightings, howler monkeys, reptiles, and other wildlife frequent the area.  Guests will enjoy a delicious lunch on one of reserve’s many farms before heading to El Chocoyero.  Also famous for its birdlife, El Chocoyero is home to thousands of "chocoyos" (parakeets), who live in the surrounding mountain walls. The tour concludes with a forest hike to two scenic waterfalls. 
 


 
Volcan Masaya: An up-close and personal evening with an active volcano

Volcan Masaya - up close and personalHalf Day | Departs at 3:30 p.m. | This evening tour begins with a ride to the Volcan Masaya National Park.  Our expert guide will lead your group through park’s museum and interpretation center, where guests will discover the volcano’s geological history and ancient folklore.  Following the introduction, the tour proceeds to the crater, where visitors can peer into the active volcano and sometimes see the reflection of lava flowing down below.  With stunning backdrops, parakeet sightings, photo-perfect moments, this tour makes the perfect sunset activity.

Full Day | Departs at 7:20 a.m. | Las Isletas de Granada are 360+ small islands just off the coast of Granada in Lake Nicaragua.  These islands were originally boulders that landed in the lake as a result of an ancient eruption of nearby Volcán Mombacho.  Explore the tiny islands via paddleboard, and get up-close views of the tropical birds and howler monkey.  This tour lasts roughly three hours, includes a knowledgeable paddle-board instructor, and drinking water.

Full Day Tour | Departs Daily at 8:00 a.m. | This unforgettable day in rural Nicaragua takes you to Hacienda Los Malacos, a colonial estate nestled in the Nicaraguan countryside.  Enjoy the colonial architecture and scenic farm views as the tour continues on horseback through the estate. Once guests dismount, the tour proceeds via rowboat down the river.  For lunch, guests can either catch their own fish or enjoy locally prepared dishes and produce.  This relaxing day is full of breathtaking scenery and is an authentic Nicaraguan experience.

Mombacho Volcano Trek and Zipline Tour

Half Day | Departs Daily at 8:00 a.m | An icon on the Nicaraguan landscape, the 1,200-meter-high Mombacho Volcano offers stunning vistas of the islands on Lake Nicaragua, an opportunity to spot diverse flora and fauna, and a challenging hike through cloud forest.  The 1.5-mile hike to the top of the dormant volcano rises through cloud forest and past three craters from the volcano’s ancient eruptions. Keep an eye out for wildlife: The Mombacho Natural Reserve is home to more than 170 animal and bird species, 22 species of reptiles and nine species of amphibians.  After you reach the top of the mountain, descend by way of a 1,500-meter zipline canopy tour!

Volcano Surfing: El Cerro Negro and the Pacific

Full Day | Departs at 7:30 a.m. | Surf down Cerro Negro, one of the youngest volcanoes in the world.  This active volcano was born in 1850 and last erupted in 1999.  Hike up the volcano’s lunar landscape and appreciate its charismatic crater and the amazing views overlooking the Nicaraguan countryside from the top.  Guides will provide guests with volcano "surfboards" and guests can surf the volcano standing up or sitting down. This extreme experience is not for the faint of heart!  After you get your heart pumping, head west to the Pacific Ocean for a fresh seafood lunch before heading back to the hotel.

Half Day | Wondering what it feels like to breath underwater or swim alongside a school of rainbow bass?  This three-hour introductory course is perfect for those who want to want to give Scuba a whirl.  Begin with a short classroom session and then progress to the pool.  Once you’ve mastered underwater breathing and equipment basics, our expert guide will take you for a dive out on the crystal-blue Laguna de Apoyo, where you will glide past cichlids, freshwater turtles, and over ancient volcanic thermal vents.  For those who hold already PADI Scuba certifications, we also offer open-water half day adventure dives and opportunities to further your certification level.
